Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

I spotted Carl Au in the ensemble of Disney's High School Musical at the Hammersmith Apollo theatre last weekend. (Limited run - it comes off sometime at the end of October I think). Very energetic and fun show if you can put up with badly behaved, noisy kids in the audience - honestly, why can't parents explain to their offspring that going to the theatre isn't like watching a TV show at home, and that live performers deserve more respect from the audience? (Sorry - that's one of my hobbyhorses I'm afraid - and it's not always just children who behave badly in theatres, sad to say). Anyway - back to HSM: almost worth seeing just for the curtain call alone, which is brilliant!

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

Someone after my own heart! Behaviour in theatres by all sectors can be APPALLING! See my postings on Candide.
The ONLY exception maybe is Wizard of Oz. Went to see it at the RFH last Sunday afternoon. I am the most intolerant person when it comes to children in theatre but watching and listening to the reaction of the kids in the audience was pure heaven. They were totally mesmorised and so if they talked a bit then it was worth putting up with to see them enjoy theatre so much.

As for your daughter and Company ......... is she sickening to Sondheim or maybe she liked one of the cast members!! JOKE!

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

It's important that youngsters get experience of live theatre - in my case (and in the case of my children, who are now grown-up and both theatre enthusiasts)it was pantomime, where of course it was ok to boo and hiss as relevant. But my parents always insisted on perfect behaviour when seeing a show which wasn't a pantomime, and those kind of habits stick with you forever. Is it me, or has behaviour generally become significantly worse in theatres over the last 10 years or so? Or am I simply mutating into a grumpy old man?
By the way - Elizabeth is both a Sondheim freak AND knew someone in the cast - so joke or no joke you're right on both counts!!

RE: theatre behaviour

As you imply, many things are different from when I started being taken by my parents to the theatre or the cinema; few bother to dress well these days, and the sound clapping at the end of a good film is a very distant memory! But, to be fair, my childhood is a very distant memory too and I guess one must accept - albeit somewhat reluctantly - that the world does not remain constant!

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

And I sat next to young lad at the Styles and Drew anniversary concert who was there to see his sister performing as part of the Arts Ed group who told me that his sister shares a flat with Carl Au. Digging the barrel I know but its a link.
Talking of Arts Ed, I believe they are going to be performing this weekend with Maria Friedman and Daniel Evans at the Cole Porter Concerts. Anyone else going? Im off on Saturday.

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

Im going to the Cole Porter Concert on Friday night.............and on Saturday night to the Donmar to see Piaf...........looking forward to both of them! And discounted tickets £60 down to £40 available for Elaine Stritch on Sunday night. See the Liberty site. PS not going to that!

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

I saw her last time at the Old Vic - amazing woman and truly entertaining evening.
Hoping for an interesting evening on Friday at The Union Theatre (where we had a society evening to see
Side by Side a few years ago). Its an all male version of The Mikado with only a piano for accompaniment. Had good reviews

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

Saw Elaine last time too which is why I m not going this time! She is fantastic and if anyone didnt see her at the Old Vic then see her this time! Heard about that Mikado.........just not enough nights in the week to do everything! Three little maids? sounds fun!! And as for Im going to marry Yum Yum ........the mind boggles! What would Gilbert have said about civil partnerships!!??

RE: Those Sondheim Student Award Winners get everywhere!

Am going to Cole Porter tomorrow and Piaf on Monday 18th.

RE: A Swell Party

Went to the Cadogan Hall last night; simply superb. Two songs listed in the programme were not performed, and with "Your Sensational" omitted it meant, somewhat strangely, there no songs written for High Society were sung at all; "Well Did You Evah" was written (and not cut) for Out of This World.

RE: A Swell Party

Was also there last night. Sorry I missed you!

RE: A Swell Party

Going tonight - what time did it finish?

RE: A Swell Party

Just short of 10pm - but as David said there were a few ommissions - maybe they will come back?
