WHAT???

Ok, judging from the date of your post you must have seen it on opening night, which I think is a little harsh to judge them for because speaking as someone who's been involved with Fringe shows before, your first night is most likely your first night in the venue, not to mention your first night with lighting etc. so there are always plenty of teething problems.

I went to see EUSOG's "Company" on Sunday night and was absolutely blown away! Their Bobby was utterly outstanding and his "Being Alive" had me in tears. It was so moving and I found the show to be very well paced infact. Whilst I agree that there are some cast members who could do with speaking up a bit, they were still audible and that girl who played April, whilst quiet, was just perfect for the role.

I would highly recommend going to see this version of Company, which I actually consider to be superior to last year's "Company", whilst that was a professional production, their Bobby bored me to tears. It's a shame that you didn't enjoy it but perhaps it was just a bad night? I was incredibly impressed with the whole product. I certainly had my reservations about going to see it because I thought that it would be too complex a show to be done by university students but they pulled it off beautifully.

It deserves the five stars it's received, hands down.

RE: WHAT???

I'm afraid I have some friends who have just returned from the festival and said that this production of Company was the worst thing they saw there (out of 26 shows). They go to, and take part in, quite a lot of theatre, and are generally very fair - it's been a long time since I've heard them be quite so critical.

"I thought that it would be too complex a show to be done by university students..."

That's a bit patronising towards university students isn't it?

I have seen some really complex pieces of theatre presented by students with just as much sophistication as any professional company. (For example, St Andrews University did Sondheim's Company at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews and it was phenomenal.) And I've seen Sweeney Todd done brilliantly by sixth-formers. Conversely, I've seen shows which professional companies have made a complete pig's ear of.

I think people might be surprised at the extremely high standards being produced by student productions generally - and surely the Sondheim Society's Student Performer of the Year award is strong evidence of this wealth of talent.

RE: WHAT???

I find that so bizarre, everyone I've spoken to about the show absolutely adored it and it's had terrific reviews! Perhaps they just saw it on a really bad night or something because I can't figure it out. I've seen a lot of productions of "Company" and it's one of my all time favourites of Sondheim's. The show had a few weak moments but I found some of the performances to be of a professional quality, in particular the Robert and Joanne were outstanding. Not to mention the orchestra who played flawlessly.

I would definitely recommend for people to go and see it, I saw it recently and perhaps they all pulled it together later into the run. That's the only thing that seems to make sense anyhow.

If you're a fan of Company, I doubt this production will disappoint.

RE: WHAT???

It's quite amazing the different reactions to the same show. I saw Company on the opening night as you suspect so I can only assume things improved dramatically during the course of the week. Interestingly, on the Fringe's own website, the last time I looked, the majority opinion was in favour although two reviews by people describing themselves as ardent Sondheim fans gave this production 1 or two stars comparable with my own rating.
